AAA is one of only two private entities that the U.S. Department of State has authorized to issue International Driving Permits (IDPs), which allow U.S. travels to drive in other countries. Any international traveler may choose to get an international driving license, even if they do not plan to drive overseas. This type of license acts as an internationally recognized ID and is convenient to have available if your plans change and driving becomes necessary.

When You Need an International Driving Permit

International travel can be fun and exciting from the road. Driving in a foreign country allows you to see sights that may be inaccessible when traveling by other means. However, even if you are a licensed driver in the U.S., you will need an IDP in order drive in another country. The IDP available through AAA is valid in more than 150 countries. Before driving on any international trip, be sure to check each country’s specific regulations to ensure that you meet all legal requirements, including insurance.
