Safe driving is a learned skill that improves with experience. However, driving ability can also be negatively impacted by changes to our bodies as we age, which means that senior drivers may need new tools and updated training to ensure that they are still able to drive safely. AAA Hudson Valley is dedicated to keeping seniors driving as long as safely possible, which is why we offer resources specifically for older adults.
AAA Senior Driver Information
According to AAA statistics, by 2030, there will be more than 70 million people aged 65 and older in the U.S., and approximately 85 to 90 percent of them will be licensed to drive. It is more important than ever to ensure that older drivers have access to defensive driving courses for seniors, self-assessment tools, and professional assessments where necessary.
Senior Driver Safety and Mobility
When physical limitations do stop you from driving safely, AAA remains committed to helping you get around through the AAA Senior Transportation Mobility Planner.
Seniors should also consider reaching out to their local Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center. Eldercare.gov can help you find the right agencies in your area.
CarFit
CarFit is an educational program designed to help mature drivers find out how well they fit in their vehicles. A proper fit in your car can reduce injuries as well as decrease the likelihood of a crash by improving visibility, accessibility, and comfort. CarFit was developed by the American Society of Aging (ASA) in collaboration with AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
AAA Hudson Valley’s Traffic Safety Team will do a CarFit for you by appointment only. To schedule a CarFit, please call (518) 426-1000 ext. 2442 or email trafficsafety@aaahv.com.
