Very few television series or movies have captured the minds and hearts of people quite as intensely as Star Trek. From the original series to its many spinoffs, this science fiction franchise has millions of fans around the world who proudly call themselves Trekkies and praise the show for being ahead of its time.
However, even among the most devoted fans, very few would have gone as far as James Crawley to show their appreciation. Using blueprints, photographs, and other research, he recreated the sets of the original Star Trek series exactly as they appeared during the show’s run from 1966 to 1969. This incredible recreation, located in historic downtown Ticonderoga, NY, is open to the public for tours and regularly hosts Star Trek events, some with guest appearances of the stars of the show’s many iterations. From Albany, Ticonderoga directions take visitors on a two-hour drive up 787, through Saratoga Springs and Lake George.
Experience a Set Tour
Tickets are required to tour the Star Trek set and may be purchased on the premises with cash or credit card. Tours of the set last about an hour and provide visitors with plenty of opportunities to take photographs, although photography is not permitted in some areas. Hours for tour availability vary by season, with winter tours only available on the weekend. The sets are closed on Mondays.
Schedule a Photo Tour
Although typical tours offer plenty of time for taking photographs, die-hard fans may want to upgrade that opportunity by scheduling a photo tour. For an additional fee, fans can dress in costume and have photos taken throughout the sets by a professional photographer. Photos are delivered via digital download.
Trekonderoga
Each year, the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour hosts Trekonderoga, a local Star Trek convention. Past and future attendees include stars from many different Star Trek films and series, including Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard) from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Each year is different, but typically stars appear in live stage presentations, host bridge chats, and are available for autographs and photos. Trekonderoga attendees can also participate in cosplay contests and tour the sets.
Other Things to Do Near Fort Ticonderoga
For true Star Trek fans, the set tour is reason enough to make the trek to Ticonderoga, but after the tour is over, there is no reason to rush home. Visitors can find plenty of other things to do near Fort Ticonderoga, including visiting the historic fort itself.
Living History at Fort Ticonderoga
Formerly known as Fort Carillon, Fort Ticonderoga is a star fort built on the shore of Lake Champlain. It was built by the French and had great strategic importance during the Seven Years War as well as the Revolutionary War. Visitors today can explore the historic fort with guided tours, living history museum experiences, and hikes through the Carillon Battlefield. During warmer months, the King’s Garden offers a visual buffet of flowers and historical insight into how troops grew food and ate in the past. Fort Ticonderoga is located less than three miles from the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour, making it a perfect destination for history buffs who want to explore the past and the future.
Outdoor Adventures
In addition to local history, plenty of spots in and around Ticonderoga allow visitors to enjoy beautiful scenery, greenery, and nature. Lake George and Lake Champlain are both easy drives from Ticonderoga and feature plenty of water-based activities as well as hiking and camping. Lake George bills itself as “the birthplace of the American Vacation,” having hosted visitors to its sandy shores and surrounding wilderness since the 1800s. Lake Champlain is the sixth largest lake in the United States, providing visitors with boat cruises and fishing before they retire to relaxing cabins in the woods.
While Star Trek fans may have no problem justifying the trip to Ticonderoga for the set tour, they can rest assured there is plenty to do and see in the area once they disembark.
