Scenic HikesBest Scenic Hikes

While the climb up may be steep, the vistas from the top are always worth the extra effort. Here are some of our favorite scenic hikes in the Catskills and surrounding area.

Pratt Rock Trail

Pratt Rock is one of those must-see spots in the Catskills. More than just a pretty view, Pratt Rock also contains carvings depicting the accomplishments of Zadock Pratt. During 1800s, Pratt lived quite an unusual life! His greatest achievements include being his ownership of the biggest shoe leather tannery in the world and his position as a congressman.

This hike itself is 3.1 miles round trip of fairly steep terrain.  Along the trail you’ll pass a series of carvings at which you can stop to catch your breath or snap some pictures. Continue up the path and you’ll be rewarded with the picturesque landscape of the Schoharie Creek and valley below.

Acra Point via Black Dome Range and Escarpment Trails

Located in Maplecrest in Greene County, Acra Point can be reached by a moderately difficult out and back trail that is 3.5 miles. Leash up your pup if you’ve got one who loves the outdoors! There are a variety of alternate ways to access Acra Point. If you’re looking for something a little longer, just know that there are options for you!

Windham High Peak

Located in the northern Catskill Mountains, Windham High Peak can be reached via a variety of different trails at all skill levels. One option is via Peck Road, a 6.5 mile round trip trail. On this moderately difficult trail you’ll traverse a seemingly enchanted forest path surrounded by tall Norway spruce trees.

The summit of High Peak is long and flat with panoramic views. From here, you can either call it a day and head back or continue on.

Best Hikes with WaterfallsHikes With Waterfalls

Waterfalls make for a perfect rest stop and photo op. There are some great hikes with waterfalls within driving distance, so keep reading!

High Falls Conservation Area

High Falls in Philmont, New York is the tallest waterfall in Columbia County at 150 feet tall! There are a few different trail options to take. Refer to the trail map at the beginning of the hike. This hike is rated as moderate but is generally regarded as kid and dog-friendly. If you do take your fur babies, make sure they are leashed. The total distance of all the trails is a quick 1.5 miles, but don’t forget to carve out some time to admire the falls!

Barberville Falls

The Barberville Falls trail is another quick hike that’s located near Poestenkill, NY in Rensselaer County. This trail is very short and steep. Luckily, there are stairs to help you get up and down safely. The Ridge Trail and the Creek Trail are two nearby trail options for once you’re done viewing the waterfall.

Diamond Notch Falls via Diamond Notch Trail

Located in Greene County, this four mile trail is moderately difficult with a steady uphill climb over rocky terrain. Diamond Notch Falls are actually two side-by-side 15 foot falls that are equally magnificent.  Plus, you can bring your leashed dog along for the adventure!

No matter which trail you end up taking, we highly recommend that you check health and safety guidelines and trail closures beforehand. Happy hiking!
