Starting May 7, 2025, New York residents will need a REAL ID-compliant form of identification to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. Here are the key points:
REAL ID Requirement:
- A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, permit, or ID card will be necessary for domestic air travel and entering military bases or certain federal facilities.
- Enhanced driver’s licenses and valid U.S. passports are also acceptable as they are already REAL ID compliant.
Identification Options:
- REAL ID: Marked with a star in the upper right corner.
- Enhanced ID: Features a flag in the corner and allows entry to Canada without a passport.
- Standard ID: Will be marked “Not for Federal Purposes” and won’t be sufficient for air travel after the deadline.
Obtaining a REAL ID:
- You must visit a DMV office in person; it cannot be done online, by phone, or mail.
- Bring original or certified documents proving identity, Social Security number, date of birth, U.S. citizenship or lawful status, and New York State residency.
Cost:
- There is no additional cost for a REAL ID compared to a standard license or non-driver ID.
- An Enhanced Driver License or Enhanced ID Card has an additional $30 fee.
Deadline:
- The enforcement date is May 7, 2025.
- While not mandatory for other purposes, it’s recommended to obtain a REAL ID well before the deadline to avoid last-minute rushes.
Alternatives:
- A valid U.S. passport can be used instead of a REAL ID for domestic flights and federal facility access.
It’s important to note that REAL ID is not required for driving, voting, or accessing essential services. However, for those who frequently travel domestically or need to enter federal facilities, obtaining a REAL ID or Enhanced ID before the deadline is advisable.
