Fall and Winter Road Trip Readiness

What to Check Before You Go

As the air turns crisp and the scenery fills with color, there’s no better time for a road trip in the Northeast. Whether you’re chasing fall foliage or heading home for the holidays, a little preparation can go a long way toward keeping your trip smooth, safe, and stress-free. Before you hit the road, take a few minutes to check both the health of your car and the contents inside it — because being road-ready means more than just a full tank of gas.

1. Give Your Vehicle a Seasonal Checkup

Cold weather can be tough on your car, so it’s important to make sure everything is in working order before you set out. Schedule a quick inspection at a trusted repair shop (AAA Members save at AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities!) or do a few checks yourself:

  • Battery: Chilly temperatures can reduce battery power. If yours is more than three years old, have it tested.
  • Tires: Inspect tread depth and air pressure — colder air can cause pressure to drop. Consider winter tires if you’ll be driving in snow or ice.
  • Fluids: Top off windshield washer fluid with a winter-grade mix and make sure your oil, coolant, and brake fluid levels are all where they should be.
  • Wipers and lights: Replace worn wiper blades and check that all exterior lights are working and bright for shorter days and early sunsets.

2. Stock an Emergency Kit

Even the best-maintained vehicles can run into trouble, especially during unpredictable weather. Both fall and winter conditions can vary dramatically from one day to the next in Upstate New York.  An emergency kit can help turn an inconvenience into a manageable situation. Keep these essentials in your trunk or cargo area:

  • Jumper cables or a portable jump starter
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Blanket and warm clothing
  • First aid kit
  • Ice scraper and small shovel
  • Bottled water and nonperishable snacks
  • A phone charger and power bank
  • Reflective triangles or road flares

As AAA Member, you’ve got the ultimate backup plan — 24/7 emergency roadside assistance — but being prepared helps you stay comfortable and safe while you wait.

3. Add Some Comfort and Convenience

Beyond safety gear, a few thoughtful items can make your fall or winter road trip more enjoyable:

  • Travel mugs or a thermos for hot drinks
  • A reusable tote or small trash bag
  • Hand warmers and tissues
  • A paper map or printed directions (you never know when cell service might fade)
  • An umbrella/rain poncho extra pair of gloves and sunglasses for surprise weather (sometimes the most blinding sun comes from reflection on snow)
  • Download the AAA Mobile App to keep your Membership card and other exclusive perks and trip info easily available

4. Don’t Forget the Paperwork

Before you go, confirm your registration, insurance, and roadside assistance information are current and easy to access. It’s also smart to let someone know your route and expected arrival time if you’ll be traveling through rural or snowy areas.

Ready to Roll

A little planning before you travel can make a big difference when it comes to staying safe and comfortable this season. With a well-checked vehicle, a stocked car, and your AAA Membership in your pocket, you’ll be ready for wherever the road takes you — from pumpkin patches to holiday gatherings and everything in between.
