Tips for Holiday Travel & Why Renting a Car Could Save You Money

Woman Driving Rental CarThe holiday travel season is here; along with the planning of family trips, celebrations and holiday parties. While some Americans may choose to stay close to home during the holiday season, it is estimated that nearly 53.4 million people will travel for Thanksgiving this year.

But between overloaded cars and costly breakdowns, how many Americans waste money on fuel, maintenance costs and time stuck in traffic?  Whether traveling 100 miles or 1,000 miles, here are some tips for not letting your hard-earned time and money fly out the window on your next road trip.

Save on Fuel
Renting a car could save you a good amount of money for fuel. If your everyday car doesn’t get great gas mileage, consider renting a hybrid or fuel-efficient car. It may save you enough money in gas that it more than pays for the car rental expense.

Additionally, a heavier vehicle uses more fuel. Lighten your load by shipping presents and non-essential items to your destination before you leave for your trip. Also try to avoid using a car’s roof rack to transport luggage or other equipment—especially over long distances on the highway. A loaded roof rack affects the vehicle aerodynamics and creates extra drag that reduces fuel economy.

Sometimes your everyday vehicle is not the car that you should drive on a road trip. No one can deny that long-distance driving is hard on an automobile. For this reason, you may prefer to rent a vehicle for road trips and save the wear and tear on your personal car.

Additionally, renting a larger vehicle allows extended family and friends to travel together, potentially cutting down on overall travel costs. And, if you are planning some off-road adventures or outdoor activities, renting a car can offer the flexibility of having the right type of car for the right occasion.

Plan Your Trip
Once you decide on your dates of travel, map your route in advance and be prepared for busy roads during the most popular holiday travel times. If possible, consider leaving earlier or later to avoid heavy traffic. This will help you avoid costly time in the car and the fuel deficiency of stop-and-go traffic.

If applicable, make hotel and rental car reservations in advance. Don’t forget, if you do decide to rent a car for your next road trip, it doesn’t mean you have to make a trip to the airport and battle air travelers and higher prices. The great service you’re used to getting at the airport is conveniently located near you. Plan ahead and reserve your vehicle well in advance of the travel period.
